The end of an era has been averted with news that a former manager and head chef have saved Ye Olde Fighting Cocks.
The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is more than a millennium old, it was founded in the year 793. The pub has been through many plagues, civil and World Wars, and many new builds around it. It may have even welcomed a few Vikings.
The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, after two years of being ravaged by the Pandemic, closed their doors in February of 2022 after the owner’s firm went into administration. There wasn’t any plan for the pub to remain permanently shuttered, but it was looking for new licensees. Thankfully, a pair of former employees have taken over the running of the pub and are now keeping it alive.

According to the report, the former manager and head chef are in charge, along with the other one who has not been a former employee. They have apparently got a vision for the pub’s future, one that will allow regulars and visitors alike to kick back with a drink as has been done before them.
The Guinness Book of Records says that Ye Olde Fighting Cocks is the oldest pub in Britain (although these claims have been disputed). According to legend, the pub was once part of the palace of Offa, king of the Mercians, and built in 793. The public house has historical records that show that it was built in the 11th century. It will keep the name for a while longer.
